The Battle for Gadhafi’s Hometown
Rebel forces have besieged Sirte, Libya in mid September and took the city after a month-long battle while facing fierce resistance from troops loyal to Libya’s ousted leader Moammar Gadhafi. This emblematic city of the dictator’s regime paid a heavy price for sheltering him in the final battle of Libya’s civil war. The battle left Sirte completely in ruins, with many buildings totally destroyed or damaged. Almost the entire civilian population left the city in fear of the heavy fighting. The battle and its aftermath marked the final collapse of the four-decade Gadhafi regime, as Gadhafi himself was captured as he attempted to flee the city.
He died in custody less than an hour later in the same town where he was born.
